FIFA 21 News: Joel Embiid Picks His FIFA Team Of The Year

It seems like everyone is naming their FIFA 21 Team of the Year this week, and the latest star to participate is Joel Embiid. The Philadelphia 76ers star is most commonly associated with the basketball court, but has been no stranger to soccer. FIFA recognized his love of the sport last year, including him as a playable character in VOLTA Mode alongside pop star Dua Lipa and Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton. But which stars made the cut on your FIFA 21 Team of the Year?

FIFA 21: the chosen goalkeeper and defenders

The 26-year-old included several of the most recognized players in his team of the year, with a variety of clubs included. Liverpool, PSG, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich were the most represented, as there were two players for each of the clubs. The two Liverpool players who made the cut were Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The two Liverpool players have been a fixture on most celebrity-picked teams so far this week. Real Madrid with Thibaut Courtois and Sergio Ramos also found a place in Embiid’s squad, with Courtois enduring competition from Alisson Becker and Manuel Neuer for the number one spot. The only North American player to be named to his team was Alphonso Davies, who capped a memorable year by becoming the first Canadian to win the Champions League with Bayern Munich.

FIFA 21: Embiid’s midfield and forwards

Embiid decided to play a 4-3-3 formation, and there is no denying that the three midfielders on his team would be good enough to get into either side of world football. The anchor for the three center-backs is Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich, who was a vital part of their 3-point winning team. Meanwhile, Kevin De Bruyne also earned a spot after another stellar season for Manchester City.

There was also room in the squad for Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, who has been a vital player for the Red Devils in transforming them into title contenders. There is no lack of star power in the last third of the field for the NBA star as he named Cristiano Ronaldo alongside PSG duo Neymar and Kylian Mbappé. That meant there was no place in the starting eleven for Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski or Barcelona’s legendary Lionel Messi.
